Car Rentals Across the Emirates
From Dubai’s golden skyline to RAK’s Jebel Jais summit — economy to Lamborghini, all 7 UAE Emirates covered with Salik tag and GPS included.
Seven Emirates, One Extraordinary Drive
The United Arab Emirates packs more contrasts into a country smaller than Scotland than almost anywhere else on earth. From Dubai’s hypermodern 12-lane Sheikh Zayed Road to the ancient coral-stone houses of Jazirat Al Hamra in RAK. From Abu Dhabi’s serene eight-lane corniche to the hairpin mountain roads above Fujairah dropping to the Gulf of Oman. From the mirror-glass towers of the DIFC to the flamingos wading silently through Umm Al Quwain’s mangrove creeks. A rental car does not merely give you transport in the UAE — it gives you access to the genuine geographic diversity that makes the Emirates genuinely extraordinary.
The UAE’s road infrastructure is world-class: impeccably maintained, bilingual (Arabic and English) signage, comprehensive GPS coverage and fuel priced at approximately AED 3.00/litre — among the cheapest in any car-owning nation. The Salik electronic toll system in Dubai (AED 4–8 per gate) and Darb in Abu Dhabi operate seamlessly with the toll tag included in every rental vehicle. Driving between emirates carries no border checks, no restrictions and no additional charges.

Salik Tolls, IDP & The Road Rules
Dubai’s Salik electronic toll system charges AED 4–8 per gate on Sheikh Zayed Road and other major routes. Tags are included in every rental vehicle — tolls are automatically billed to your account. Abu Dhabi’s Darb charges AED 2–4 per bridge crossing.
UAE petrol prices are among the world’s most affordable at approximately AED 3.00 per litre for regular unleaded — cheaper than bottled water in some parts of the world. Full-service attendants fill the tank at every station. Major credit cards accepted everywhere.
Zero Alcohol Tolerance
UAE enforces 0.00% blood alcohol limit — the strictest in the world. Any alcohol in your system while driving results in immediate arrest, heavy fines, jail time and deportation for expatriates. Zero tolerance means exactly that. Taxis and Careem/Uber are abundant and inexpensive alternatives.
Car Rentals Across All 7 UAE Emirates
From Dubai’s world-class highways to UAQ’s tranquil mangrove creeks — comprehensive car hire across every Emirate
| Emirate | Hub / Airport | Key Rental Information & Driving Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | DXB / DWC | UAE’s most visited emirate and the Middle East’s luxury car rental capital. Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum (DWC) both have 24/7 rental counters from Hertz, Budget, Avis, Europcar, Thrifty and local operators. The Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) 12-lane highway connects all major districts. Salik gates charge AED 4–8 per crossing on most routes. Heavy rush-hour traffic (7–9am, 6–8pm) — avoid these windows for any cross-city journey. Economy cars from AED 80/day; supercars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce) from AED 1,000/day. Parking: Downtown and Marina AED 4–10/hour; suburban malls typically free. Desert safari packages (dune bashing, camel rides) require Nissan Patrol or Land Cruiser from Al Qudra and Lahbab areas (60 km from city). |
| Abu Dhabi | AUH | UAE’s capital and largest emirate offers a more spacious, less congested driving experience than Dubai. Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) has comprehensive rental desks. The Sheikh Zayed Bridge and Maqtaa Bridge crossings use the Darb electronic toll system (AED 2–4 per crossing, tag included). Wide boulevards and well-planned grid layout make navigation straightforward. The Corniche Road (8 km waterfront) is ideal for leisurely drives. Key destinations by car: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (15 minutes from airport), Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island (20 minutes), Yas Island theme parks — Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros (30 minutes), and Liwa Oasis desert (200 km south, Rub’ al Khali dunes access). Economy cars from AED 90/day. F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit attracts premium car enthusiasts every November. |
| Sharjah | SHJ | UAE’s cultural capital and most budget-friendly emirate for car rental, with rates typically 15–20% below Dubai. Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) serves numerous budget airlines and has a good rental fleet. Crucially, Sharjah has NO Salik or Darb toll gates, making every journey toll-free — a significant daily saving over Dubai. The emirate strictly enforces alcohol-free and conservative dress code policies (in contrast to Dubai). Key attractions: Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Heritage Area, the iconic Blue Souk (Central Market), Al Qasba waterfront and Sharjah Aquarium. Evening congestion is notable as thousands commute home from Dubai (E11 highway, 15–25 minutes in traffic). Economy cars from AED 70/day. Many visitors use Sharjah as a budget base with Dubai day trips. Parking is abundant and largely free throughout the emirate. |
| Ajman | E11 Access | UAE’s smallest emirate (260 km²) is perfectly suited to compact cars and offers the country’s most affordable rental rates from AED 65/day. No toll gates, minimal traffic, and predominantly free parking throughout the emirate make it the stress-free choice. The scenic Ajman Corniche runs 5 km along the Arabian Gulf waterfront. Key attractions: Ajman Museum in a restored 18th-century fort, traditional dhow building yards (the last in the UAE where wooden boats are still constructed by hand) and Ajman’s fine sandy beach. Location makes it ideal as a central UAE base: Sharjah 15 minutes, Dubai 35 minutes, RAK 45 minutes via E11 and E88 highways. The adjacent Al Zorah Natural Reserve features mangrove kayaking and flamingo watching — one of the Emirates’ best nature experiences. |
| Ras Al Khaimah | RAK Airport | UAE’s adventure tourism capital is transforming rapidly, anchored by Jebel Jais — the UAE’s highest peak (1,934m) featuring the world’s longest zipline (2.83 km) and exceptional mountain driving on newly surfaced hairpin roads with panoramic views. SUVs and 4x4s are strongly recommended for wadi (valley) exploration and mountain excursions. RAK International Airport has limited rental options; most visitors rent in Dubai and enjoy the scenic 60-minute E11/E311 drive north. Key destinations: Dhayah Fort (the UAE’s only intact hilltop fortress), Jazirat Al Hamra (abandoned ghost town of traditional coral stone buildings), Jebel Jais mountain road, RAK’s northern Arabian Gulf beaches (less crowded than Dubai). Premium resort brands including Waldorf Astoria and Ritz-Carlton have elevated RAK to a luxury weekend destination from Dubai. Economy rates from AED 85/day when renting locally. |
| Fujairah | FJR Airport | The UAE’s only emirate entirely on the eastern coast (Gulf of Oman, not the Arabian Gulf) offers dramatically different landscapes — the Hajar Mountains meeting the Indian Ocean coastline. The 90-minute drive from Dubai through the mountains (E102 road via Masafi or the E88 via Hatta) is one of the UAE’s finest scenic drives, worth doing in daylight for the mountain pass views. Key attractions: Fujairah Fort (16th-century), Al-Bidyah Mosque (the UAE’s oldest, dating to 1446 AD), Snoopy Island dive site (world-class snorkelling from the beach) and Khor Fakkan’s container port and beach. A 4x4 is ideal for wadi bashing in the interior. Significantly cooler climate in summer than west coast (5–8°C difference). Fujairah Airport (FJR) has limited rentals; rent in Dubai for best selection. Economy rates from AED 80/day locally. |
| Umm Al Quwain | UAQ / E11 | The UAE’s most tranquil and least-visited emirate is best reached from Ajman (15 minutes on the E11) or Sharjah (30 minutes). UAQ has no commercial airport and a very small local rental market — rent in Sharjah or Ajman and drive here. A compact car is entirely sufficient given the emirate’s modest scale. Key attractions: Al Sinniyah Island (accessible by local boat, home to flamingo colonies, mangroves and dugong habitat), Dreamland Aqua Park (UAE’s oldest waterpark), Old Town’s traditional coral-stone buildings, UAQ Marine Club for water sports, and the remarkably intact traditional fishing community lifestyle that has changed little in decades. Virtually no traffic, entirely free parking throughout the emirate. For anyone wanting to experience authentic, unhurried Emirati life without the crowds of Dubai, UAQ is the UAE’s best-kept secret. |
Rental Guides for UAE’s Most Popular Emirates
Airports, tolls, parking, Salik charges and the best drives from each Emirate

Dubai
UAE’s Global City · Burj Khalifa · Palm Jumeirah
Dubai’s car rental market is the world’s most stratified: the same city rents Nissan Sunnys for AED 80/day and Bugattis for AED 15,000+/day. Dubai International Airport (DXB, Terminal 3) has the UAE’s largest rental selection with all international and local operators. The 12-lane Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) is the city’s spine, connecting Jebel Ali in the southwest to Deira in the northeast. Salik gates operate on most major routes at AED 4–8 per crossing — budget AED 20–60/day for heavy city driving. Rush hours (7–9am, 6–8pm) are serious — plan cross-city journeys outside these windows.
Dubai’s finest drives: the Palm Jumeirah Trunk Road (a 5km stretch of the world’s largest artificial palm island), the Dubai Creek approach past historic Al Fahidi, the Al Khawaneej road to the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve (sand dunes 45 minutes from Downtown), and the Hatta mountain road (E44, 90 minutes to the Hajar foothills with Hatta Dam). Parking in Downtown and Dubai Marina costs AED 4–10/hour (RTA parking app essential). Shopping mall parking is generally free with purchase validation.

Abu Dhabi
UAE Capital · Sheikh Zayed Mosque · Yas Island
Abu Dhabi is a more spacious, planned city than Dubai — wide boulevards, organised grid districts and significantly less congestion despite being a major business capital. Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) has comprehensive rental desks from all major operators. The Darb electronic toll system applies at bridge crossings (AED 2–4 per crossing, tag included). The 8km Corniche waterfront road with its maintained gardens and clear Gulf views is one of the finest urban drives in the Middle East.
Abu Dhabi’s driving landscape is extraordinary in scope. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque — one of the world’s largest and most beautiful, accommodating 40,000 worshippers — is 15 minutes from the airport on the E10 highway. Yas Island (30 minutes from downtown, 20 from airport): Ferrari World Arabia, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World and the 5.5km Yas Marina F1 Circuit — the only motorsport venue in the Middle East. Liwa Oasis (200 km south on the E45) sits at the edge of the Rub’ al Khali — the world’s largest continuous sand desert. A 4x4 is essential here. Al Ain (160 km east on the E22): UNESCO oasis city with date palm gardens, the Jebel Hafit mountain road to 1,200m and the Hili Archaeological Park (3,500-year-old Bronze Age tombs).

Sharjah
Cultural Capital · No Salik Tolls · Budget-Friendly
Sharjah is the UAE’s cultural capital — its 17 museums (including the outstanding Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and the Museum of the Arabian Khaleeji Women) have earned it UNESCO’s designation as Arab Culture Capital. Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) serves Wizz Air, flydubai and numerous other carriers, making it many visitors’ entry point. The critical rental advantage: Sharjah has absolutely no Salik or Darb toll gates anywhere in the emirate — every journey is toll-free, saving AED 20–60/day compared to Dubai-based rentals. Economy cars from AED 70/day.
Sharjah is architecturally conservative compared to Dubai — no skyscrapers, alcohol entirely banned, dress codes more conservative. The Heritage Area preserves traditional Emirati vernacular architecture in exceptional condition. The Blue Souk (Central Market) on the Corniche is the UAE’s finest traditional market for carpets, jewellery and handicrafts. Al Qasba waterfront canal (30-minute drive from the airport) has restaurants and the Eye of the Emirates observation wheel. The Sharjah Desert Park (28 km east, take the E88) contains the Arabian Wildlife Centre — the UAE’s finest wildlife collection. Evening traffic congestion on the Al Wahda Street and Maliha Road can be heavy — avoid between 5–8pm.

Ras Al Khaimah
UAE’s Adventure Capital · Jebel Jais · World’s Longest Zipline
Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE’s most geographically spectacular emirate — the Hajar Mountains rise dramatically from the Arabian Gulf coastline, and the Jebel Jais road climbs to 1,934m through a series of hairpin bends with vertiginous valley views. This is genuinely exceptional mountain driving by any international standard. RAK International Airport has limited rental inventory; most visitors rent a Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser in Dubai (AED 250–350/day) and make the 60-minute E11/E311 scenic drive north.
Jebel Jais itself takes 45 minutes to drive from the RAK city centre — the recently resurfaced mountain road is smooth, well-graded and safe in dry conditions, though fog is common above 1,500m and care is needed. At the summit: the world’s longest zipline (2.83 km, 120 km/h, 1,680m vertical), via ferrata climbing routes, a sky-high restaurant and an extraordinary panorama of the Hajar range. Back at sea level: Dhayah Fort perches on a 100m rock pinnacle above a date palm oasis — the most dramatic fort setting in the UAE. The deserted town of Jazirat Al Hamra (abandoned 1968) preserves intact traditional coral stone houses, the most authentic Arabian heritage site in the UAE. RAK’s beaches are wider, less crowded and more natural than Dubai’s. Desert camping at Al Hamra, camel racing at the RAK track and the Waldorf Astoria’s beachfront restaurant complete the picture.

Fujairah
Gulf of Oman · UAE’s Diving Capital · Mountain Roads
Fujairah is the UAE’s most geographically isolated emirate — the Hajar Mountains separate it physically from the rest of the country, and its coast faces the Indian Ocean (Gulf of Oman) rather than the Persian Gulf. This isolation creates its distinctive character: cooler summers (5–8°C below Dubai in July), extraordinary marine life (coral reefs, dolphins, whale sharks accessible from the beach at Snoopy Island), and mountain landscapes that feel entirely different from the flat plains of western UAE.
The drive from Dubai to Fujairah is itself one of the UAE’s finest experiences. The E102 mountain road through the Masafi pass crosses the Hajar at 600m, passing through wadi gorges with ancient falaj (traditional irrigation channel) systems, date palm oases and small mountain villages. Total journey: 90 minutes. Al-Bidyah Mosque (20 km north of Fujairah city) is the oldest mosque in the UAE, built in 1446 AD from mud and gypsum — remarkably intact and still used for Friday prayers. The Friday morning Fujairah Heritage Village fish market is extraordinary. Rent a 4x4 locally for wadi bashing expeditions into the interior. Khor Fakkan (30 km north) has the finest swimming beach on the UAE’s east coast, with clear visibility to the reef coral from the shore.

Ajman
UAE’s Most Affordable Emirate · Corniche · Budget-Friendly
Ajman is the UAE at its most authentic and affordable — a compact coastal emirate where life moves at a gentler pace and the priorities are fresh fish, family and the sea. The lowest car rental rates in the UAE (from AED 65/day), no tolls anywhere, predominantly free parking throughout the emirate, and minimal traffic combine to make Ajman one of the most economical bases for UAE exploration. The Ajman Corniche stretches 5km along the Arabian Gulf with waterfront cafes, walkways and a sandy beach that gets none of Dubai’s weekend crowds.
The traditional dhow building yards at the southern end of Ajman Creek are among the last places in the world where craftsmen still construct wooden ocean-going vessels using centuries-old techniques — no power tools, just hand tools and the memory of generations. The Ajman Museum (in the 18th-century Al Nai’m Fort) covers the emirate’s maritime and archaeological heritage. The Al Zorah Natural Reserve (shared border with UAQ) has kayaking through mangrove channels where flamingos, herons and kingfishers feed. Location advantages: Sharjah 15 minutes, Dubai 35 minutes, RAK 45 minutes. Ajman is also significantly cheaper for accommodation than Dubai or Abu Dhabi, making it the UAE’s best value base for budget-conscious travellers who still want to explore the wider country.

Umm Al Quwain
UAE’s Hidden Gem · Mangroves · Flamingos
Umm Al Quwain is the UAE’s best-kept secret — the country at its most natural and least commercialised. The smallest of the seven Emirates by population (around 70,000 residents), UAQ has no commercial airport and no toll gates, which is exactly why it remains undiscovered by most visitors. Reach it from Ajman (15 minutes on E11) or Sharjah (30 minutes). Rent a compact car locally or more practically, rent in Sharjah and drive. Economy rates from AED 70/day locally.
UAQ’s defining feature is Al Sinniyah Island — a protected nature reserve accessible only by a short boat crossing (5 minutes, boats available at the creek). The island hosts one of the UAE’s largest flamingo colonies alongside mangrove forests, dugong feeding grounds and sea turtle nesting beaches. The Old Town (Al Baladiyah) preserves the UAE’s most intact traditional coral-stone architecture — winding lanes between historic buildings unchanged since the early 20th century. Dreamland Aqua Park (1km from the city centre) is the UAE’s original waterpark. UAQ Marine Club offers jet-skiing, boat hire and water sports at prices well below Dubai’s equivalents. For visitors who want to experience the UAE beyond the Instagram skylines — the mangroves, the dhow harbours, the pearl-diving heritage, the Thursday evening fish market — Umm Al Quwain is irreplaceable.

Essential Driving Rules for UAE
Frequently Asked Questions About Renting in UAE
Most international tourists need an IDP alongside their home country driving licence. Exceptions: GCC nationals (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman) can drive on their home licence without an IDP. Citizens of the UK, USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several European countries can rent at most major operators using only their home licence, but requirements vary significantly between companies. The safest approach is to obtain an IDP before travelling — it costs approximately USD 20 from your national automobile association and eliminates any risk of refusal at the rental counter. Always carry your original home licence, IDP and passport together whenever driving in UAE.
Salik tags (Dubai) and Darb tags (Abu Dhabi) are included in every rental vehicle at no extra charge. However, the actual toll amounts are NOT included in the rental price — they are automatically charged to your rental account via the tag in the vehicle and itemised on your return invoice. Dubai Salik charges AED 4–8 per gate crossing. Abu Dhabi Darb charges AED 2–4 per bridge crossing. Some rental companies add a small service fee (AED 3–5) per toll crossing on top of the actual toll amount — confirm this at the desk. For heavy Dubai city driving (crossing multiple gates daily), budget AED 20–60 per day in toll costs. Sharjah, Ajman, RAK, Fujairah and UAQ have no toll systems whatsoever.
Yes — you can drive freely across all 7 UAE Emirates with no restrictions, no border checkpoints and no additional charges. The country’s exceptional highway network makes inter-emirate travel simple and fast: Dubai to Abu Dhabi (130 km, 90 minutes on E11); Dubai to Sharjah (25 km, 20 minutes on E11); Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah (115 km, 60 minutes on E11/E311); Dubai to Fujairah (130 km, 90 minutes on E102 via Masafi). Taking rental cars outside UAE to Oman (via the Al Ain–Buraimi crossing or Hatta–Mahdah road) requires written special permission from the rental company and additional insurance — this is occasionally permitted for long-term rentals but rarely for standard daily or weekly bookings. Saudi Arabia border crossings are not permitted on rental vehicles under any circumstances.
Dubai has the world’s most competitive exotic car rental market. Indicative daily rates: Porsche 911 / BMW M4: AED 1,000–1,800. Ferrari 488 / Lamborghini Huracan: AED 2,500–4,000. Ferrari F8 / Lamborghini Aventador: AED 4,000–7,000. Rolls-Royce Ghost / Bentley Flying Spur: AED 3,000–6,000. McLaren 720S: AED 5,000–8,000. Bugatti Chiron (when available): AED 15,000+. Weekly and monthly rates offer 20–35% discounts. Security deposits: AED 5,000–20,000 pre-authorised on credit card (released on return). Minimum age: 25 years. Full CDW insurance strongly recommended — the excess on supercars is typically AED 10,000–50,000 without full cover. Supercar rental is almost exclusively based in Dubai; limited availability in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
For tourists: (1) Valid passport with UAE tourist visa or visa-on-arrival stamp; (2) Original home country driving licence; (3) International Driving Permit (required for most nationalities); (4) Credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit (debit cards are not accepted by most UAE operators); (5) Return flight itinerary (some operators request this). For UAE residents: Emirates ID, UAE driving licence and passport. Security deposits vary by vehicle category: AED 1,500–3,000 for economy/compact, AED 3,000–8,000 for luxury sedans, AED 5,000–20,000 for supercars. These are pre-authorised (not charged) and released after return inspection, typically within 3–7 business days.
UAE roads are well-maintained, bilingual (Arabic and English), and systematically enforced — making them among the world’s most orderly driving environments for tourists. Key safety observations: aggressive driving and sudden lane changes without signalling are common, particularly on Sheikh Zayed Road and inter-emirate highways. Very high-performance vehicles (supercars, large SUVs) are driven fast by some UAE residents. Defensive driving and maintaining larger following distances than you might use at home is essential. Speed cameras cover virtually all roads — this enforcement actually makes the roads safer by deterring extreme speeding. GPS works flawlessly throughout UAE. Avoid driving during heavy sandstorms (visibility can drop below 50m with no warning). Summer heat (45°C+) demands a reliably air-conditioned vehicle. Night driving on unlit rural tracks in RAK, Fujairah and the desert roads is not recommended without specific experience and a 4x4.
UAE’s automated speed camera and traffic monitoring system registers fines against the vehicle’s licence plate. The rental company will charge your credit card for the fine amount plus an administrative processing fee (typically AED 100–300). Speeding fines: AED 300 (less than 20 km/h over limit) to AED 3,000+ (more than 60 km/h over). Serious violations (extreme speeding, running red lights) can result in vehicle impoundment. Red light camera fines: AED 1,000. Fines are typically notified via SMS to the registered contact number. Some rental companies offer "fine protection" packages covering the administrative fee but never the fine itself. If your rental vehicle is impounded, you may be responsible for impoundment and storage costs in addition to the fine amount.
Ajman consistently offers the UAE’s lowest rental rates (from AED 65/day for economy), followed by Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah. Beyond the base rate, Sharjah’s advantage is significant: no Salik or Darb toll gates saving AED 20–60/day in toll costs for anyone making multiple journeys. For budget-conscious travellers wanting to explore the UAE, the optimal strategy is: rent in Sharjah from a local operator (AED 70–100/day, no tolls) and make day trips to Dubai (25 minutes, a few Salik crossings) rather than basing in Dubai and paying daily Salik charges on top of higher rental rates. Ajman provides equally low rental costs with the added advantage of being 15 minutes from Sharjah. Tenerife South and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands consistently offer Spain’s lowest rental rates if the question was about Spain — but for UAE specifically, Ajman and Sharjah win clearly.
Yes, and growing rapidly. Tesla Model 3, Model S, BMW i4, Mercedes EQS and Porsche Taycan are available from major operators at DXB, AUH and some city-centre offices. Rates are similar to equivalent petrol luxury vehicles (AED 300–800/day). UAE’s EV charging infrastructure is expanding fast: Abu Dhabi has over 200 ADNOC EV charging stations; Dubai has extensive DEWA EV Green Charger network (1,000+ chargers); most major malls provide free EV charging with parking. Practical considerations: inter-emirate travel requires range planning — Dubai to Abu Dhabi (130 km) is well within range of any modern EV. More remote destinations (Liwa Oasis, Jebel Jais summit) have limited charging availability and require advance planning.
